European Mouflon Sheep Hunting in Croatia

Upon arrival in Croatia you will be greeted at the airport and transferred to the hunting area. The drive itself is already an experience, with views of the Adriatic coastline, old towns, and the dramatic slopes of Velebit or the Mediterranean islands depending on where the hunt takes place.

When we reach the lodge, we unpack and get settled into the rooms. Afterwards, we head to the shooting range to test the rifles, normally at 100–200 meters. This is an important step, as it allows every hunter to adjust optics, go through the ballistics, and gain confidence for the upcoming hunt. It is also a relaxed moment to discuss the strategy for the following days and the typical shooting situations in Croatian terrain.

In the evening, we gather for dinner featuring traditional Croatian cuisine – wild game, lamb, fish, and excellent local wines. Around the table we review the hunting plan in detail, exchange experiences, and prepare both mentally and physically for the first hunting day. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, making the start of the adventure smooth and enjoyable.

The hunt starts early in the morning. Each hunter is accompanied by a guide. Depending on the terrain, we move either by jeep or on foot. Velebit offers a combination of steep rocky terrain and forest, while the islands are more open with rocky hills and typical Mediterranean landscape.

Every day is different, but mouflons are often active early in the morning and late in the evening, so the hunting rhythm adapts to that.

The hunt itself is not extremely demanding, but good physical condition is recommended, especially for Velebit and Mosor where the terrain can be steep. Shooting distances are usually between 150–250 meters, sometimes more depending on the situation.

Once the hunt is successfully completed, the focus shifts to celebrating the experience and enjoying everything Croatia has to offer. Back at the lodge, trophies are prepared for transport, while the group enjoys traditional meals and stories from the hunt around the fireplace or terrace overlooking the landscape.

If the hunter wishes to take the trophy back immediately, all the necessary papers and documentation for transport will be provided. For European hunters, CITES is not required, and the trophy certificate can be issued a few hours after the hunt is completed (once the points are evaluated according to CIC, so it is clear how much remains to be paid). Alternatively, the hunter may choose to have the trophy sent to our taxidermist. Once the euro mount or taxidermy is completed, the finished trophy can be shipped directly to the hunter’s address. If the trophy is being exported to another country, CITES may be required for certain species. This permit can take up to two months to obtain, after which the trophy will be sent directly to the hunter’s address.

After leaving the hunting ground, most hunters choose to spend one or two extra days in Zagreb or Split, depending on the airport of departure. Both cities offer an excellent combination of culture, gastronomy, and nightlife.

Zagreb: Croatia’s capital has a Central European charm with historic streets, cozy cafés, and great restaurants. It is perfect for sightseeing, wine tasting, or a relaxed evening in the old town.

Split: A coastal city with the famous Diocletian’s Palace, lively bars, and seafood restaurants right by the sea. From Split you can also take short trips to nearby islands or coastal towns.
